Michael Raeburn explique : "Triomf par sa pertinence au monde d’aujourd’hui, révèle avec une exactitude choquante l’état de suffocation et de haine de soi qui s’installe lorsqu’une famille, une classe, une société, et même une nation entière se replie sur elle-même. (...) Dans mon film, un mensonge secret ronge une famille de petits blancs, tout comme le mensonge apartheid ronge l’état de l’Afrique du Sud. L’histoire se déroule comme une tragédie grecque: claustrophobie, inceste, furie et folie se déclenchent dans une famille dont l’implosion reflète les affaires de l’état au moment où un ancien régime doit périr pour faire place à un nouveau monde."

(...) in my film, a secret lie gnaws a small white family, just as the apartheid lie gnaws the state of South Africa. the story unfolds as a Greek tragedy: claustrophobia, incest, madness and fury are triggered in a family whose implosion reflects the affairs of the state at the time an old regime must die to make way for a new world. "
